Dr. Jennifer Somerlott is a clinical psychologist who brings compassion, organization, and a strong work ethic to her work with clients. She provides integrative, individualized care, thoughtfully adapting her approach to each person’s environment, family relationships, developmental stage, culture, strengths, and goals. Her aim is to help clients recognize the resources already within and around them while developing practical strategies for greater well-being.
Dr. Somerlott earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Western Washington University. She later received her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Psychology from George Fox University.
Her interest in psychology began when she realized that friends naturally turned to her for a listening ear, encouragement, and thoughtful support. Recognizing that she was already helping others in many of the ways a counselor might inspired her to pursue psychology professionally and develop the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Raised in the rural Pacific Northwest, Dr. Somerlott developed an early appreciation for community, tradition, creativity, and the different experiences that shape people’s lives. She performed in plays and studied classical dance during her youth, experiences that strengthened her comfort with self-expression, collaboration, and viewing situations from different perspectives.
Throughout her career, Dr. Somerlott has intentionally worked in a variety of settings, roles, and locations. These diverse experiences have expanded her understanding of different cultures, traditions, family systems, and life circumstances while strengthening her versatility as a generalist. She believes that effective care should reflect the whole person rather than rely on a single, predetermined approach.
In her work with clients, Dr. Somerlott draws from an integrative perspective, matching her methods to each person’s individual needs and circumstances. She considers the influence of a client’s environment, family, culture, and developmental level while building upon the strengths and skills they already possess. Together, she and her clients work toward a broad range of short- and long-term goals that support lasting well-being.
Dr. Somerlott remains passionate about helping people identify their strengths, connect with useful resources, and build constructive relationships and collaborations. She finds meaning in helping make the world a better and brighter place, one person at a time. Her personal values include practicing what she preaches, maintaining calm both internally and externally, honoring tradition, and drawing wisdom from the Serenity Prayer and her Catholic faith.
Outside of work, Dr. Somerlott enjoys spending time with her husband, a high school friend with whom she later reconnected, as well as her two rescue cats and pit-pug-boxer. An enthusiastic traveler, she has visited all seven continents and speaks some French, Spanish, and American Sign Language. She also enjoys comedies, including Ghosts and Monty Python, attending community and Broadway theater productions, volunteering, helping others solve problems, and bringing a little silliness into life while encouraging self-care.
