Dr. John Fleming is a clinical psychologist who brings directness, intellectual rigor, and genuine curiosity to his work. He provides thoughtful, individualized care for clients seeking more than a formulaic approach to therapy, creating a secure and engaging space where they can examine difficult experiences, express what has been left unsaid, and pursue meaningful change.
Dr. Fleming earned his Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University and his Master of Business Administration from the University of Dayton. He later earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
His path to psychology began with an enduring interest in philosophy, cognitive science, and the questions that shape human behavior: why people do what they do, how they construct meaning under pressure, and how the selves they present to the world may differ from those they experience internally. Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Fleming worked in Information Technology. Years of studying systems taught him to identify the patterns beneath the surface—an instinct that ultimately shifted from understanding machines to understanding people. As a gay man, questions surrounding identity and the self have also held deep personal significance and helped fuel his interest in clinical psychology.
Dr. Fleming works especially well with people who are tired of hollow therapeutic formulas, including high achievers struggling with self-doubt or feeling like frauds, individuals living with complex trauma, and those navigating intense emotional volatility. He offers a sophisticated therapeutic partnership that respects each client’s intelligence while providing a secure foundation for exploring the experiences that are hardest to articulate.
Although well versed in evidence-based modalities, Dr. Fleming does not view any single method as a universal solution. He integrates the precision and practicality of cognitive-behavioral therapies with the depth of psychodynamic and humanistic perspectives. His approach helps clients develop the cognitive scaffolding needed to stabilize, understand, and communicate intense emotions, allowing raw distress to become a clearer and more actionable map.
Dr. Fleming has specialized experience supporting clients with LGBTQ+ concerns, neurodiversity—including autism and ADHD—health psychology and behavior change, substance use concerns, and anxiety. He is deeply comfortable working with complex and unconventional identities, relationships, and lifestyles. Clients can expect him to be honest and direct without losing sight of the empathy, trust, and emotional safety required for meaningful therapeutic work.
What continues to inspire Dr. Fleming is the moment when a client stops performing and says something they have never before been able to express aloud. He considers these moments among the most emotionally honest and engaging aspects of his work. He remains committed to the field because every person brings a distinct and compelling story, and because a well-developed therapeutic relationship can create the conditions for genuine change.
Outside of work, Dr. Fleming enjoys traveling, camping, spending time outdoors, and exercising regularly. He studies and practices both Spanish and French, enjoys crossword puzzles and word games, and builds custom software while exploring new applications of natural language processing and large language models. He also shares his adventures with his beloved cat.
