Dr. Shilpa Thayyullathil is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist who is known for her compassionate, thoughtful, and deeply patient-centered approach to care. As a second-generation Indian American who grew up in New Jersey, Dr. Thayyullathil developed an appreciation for medicine at an early age by witnessing her father's passion for helping others as the first physician in his family. Although she always felt drawn to medicine, it was during her medical training that she discovered her true calling in psychiatry and the profound impact that meaningful therapeutic relationships can have on people's lives.

Dr. Thayyullathil earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Oberlin College and went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine degree from St. George's University School of Medicine. She completed her psychiatry residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where she further developed her passion for helping individuals navigate life's challenges and better understand themselves.
What initially drew Dr. Thayyullathil to the field of mental health was seeing firsthand the devastation that mental health struggles can have on individuals and the ripple effects they can create for families and loved ones. She also witnessed how stigma often prevents people from seeking support, leading to isolation and unnecessary suffering. These experiences inspired her to pursue a career that emphasizes listening, understanding, and building meaningful connections with others.

Dr. Thayyullathil believes that every person deserves to be heard and understood. She is deeply committed to creating a safe, nonjudgmental, and compassionate environment where clients feel comfortable discussing even the most personal aspects of their lives. She views the therapeutic relationship as a partnership built on trust, empathy, and curiosity, and she works alongside her clients to help them better understand themselves, transform unhelpful patterns of thinking and behavior, and improve their overall quality of life.

Her approach to care focuses on treating the whole person—mind, body, and emotional well-being. Dr. Thayyullathil is a strong advocate for incorporating wellness-based practices into treatment and believes in the importance of lifestyle factors such as physical activity, restorative sleep, nutrition, and talk therapy in supporting emotional health and resilience. She recognizes that every individual's journey is unique and works collaboratively with clients to develop personalized strategies that align with their goals and values.

What continues to inspire Dr. Thayyullathil in her work is the growing need for mental health support and the opportunity to educate, advocate, and help reduce stigma surrounding mental illness. While she has seen encouraging progress in increasing access to care and promoting conversations about mental health, she believes there is still important work to be done to ensure that everyone feels empowered to seek help when they need it.

Clients often describe Dr. Thayyullathil as compassionate, kind, and an exceptional listener. She genuinely cares about the people she works with and feels honored to walk alongside them as they navigate life's challenges, discover their strengths, and move toward greater healing, self-understanding, and well-being.
