Dr. Taylor Brooks is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist who provides compassionate, thoughtful, and individualized mental health care. Empathetic and attentive, Dr. Brooks strives to create a welcoming, supportive environment where clients feel genuinely heard, understood, and respected. She believes meaningful mental health care begins with developing a trusting therapeutic relationship and taking the time to understand each person's unique experiences, circumstances, and goals.
Dr. Brooks grew up in Los Angeles, California, where she developed an early appreciation for the importance of listening to and supporting others. Watching her father provide counsel and guidance to members of their community helped shape her interest in understanding people and offering support during challenging times. Naturally compassionate and curious about human behavior, she became increasingly interested in the experiences, relationships, and circumstances that influence how individuals think, feel, and navigate the world.
Dr. Brooks earned her Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Science with a concentration in Psychology from Rice University before completing her medical degree at Meharry Medical College. During medical school, she received the Rafael Hernandez, M.D. Award in Psychiatry, an honor presented to a graduating medical student in recognition of excellence in clinical psychiatry. She subsequently completed her psychiatry residency at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt, where she received the Dr. Donald Ross Award for Outstanding Psychotherapy Paper for her work exploring complex emotional and relational themes through psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Her interest in psychiatry developed from a longstanding fascination with human behavior and a desire to better understand individuals whose experiences may be misunderstood or stigmatized. During her medical training, she discovered that psychiatry offered a meaningful opportunity to combine her intellectual curiosity with her passion for helping others. She was particularly drawn to the field's emphasis on understanding the whole person and recognizing the complex connections between emotional well-being, relationships, and life experiences.
Dr. Brooks takes a thoughtful, collaborative, and holistic approach to care. She believes effective treatment should reflect each individual's unique needs, preferences, and personal goals rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. Her psychotherapy background includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, and experience with Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These approaches have strengthened her appreciation for evidence-based care while reinforcing the importance of understanding the emotional and relational experiences that shape each person's mental health.
Central to Dr. Brooks's philosophy is the belief that clients should feel empowered to participate actively in their care. She works collaboratively with individuals to explore their concerns, develop a clearer understanding of their experiences, and identify meaningful goals for personal growth and well-being. She values open communication, mutual respect, and creating a therapeutic environment where clients feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment.
Dr. Brooks has a particular interest in reproductive psychiatry and women's mental health, including the emotional and psychological challenges that can arise during different stages of life. She is passionate about supporting individuals as they navigate these experiences, recognizing the importance of compassionate, individualized care that considers both personal circumstances and broader life transitions.
What continues to inspire Dr. Brooks is witnessing clients make meaningful progress in their lives. She finds it especially rewarding to help individuals better understand what they are experiencing, recognize patterns in their thoughts and emotions, and develop greater confidence in navigating challenges. Above all, she hopes that every client leaves their interactions feeling heard, understood, and empowered to move forward.
Outside of work, Dr. Brooks enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, cooking, reading, and exploring new restaurants. She also appreciates spending time outdoors and going for walks.
