Dorothea Jattan is a Board-Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing care that is kind, curious, and genuinely nonjudgmental. She strives to create a welcoming environment where clients feel heard, understood, and supported as whole people—not simply as patients moving through an appointment.
Dorothea earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chamberlain College and her Master of Science in Nursing from Jacksonville University. Her path into psychiatric mental health nursing began unexpectedly, sparked by a colleague’s recommendation as she explored the direction of her graduate education. What began as a practical suggestion quickly grew into a deeply meaningful vocation.
Before entering psychiatric practice, Dorothea spent nearly a decade as a Trauma ICU nurse. Those years profoundly shaped her clinical perspective, offering her a close view of human vulnerability, resilience, and the lasting effects of trauma. The intensity of that work taught her to remain steady during times of crisis, listen deeply, and approach every individual with compassion and respect. Today, that experience forms the foundation of her trauma-informed approach—one grounded in wisdom, patience, and an understanding of how past experiences can shape present realities.
Throughout her nursing career, Dorothea discovered that psychiatric care offered something she had been seeking all along: the opportunity to connect with clients in a way that felt authentic and human. She values listening closely, exploring the complexities of the human experience, and offering empathy and new perspectives. These meaningful interactions continually deepen her passion for the field and inspire her commitment to lifelong learning.
Dorothea believes effective mental health care begins with understanding each client’s unique story. She asks thoughtful questions to learn about the whole person, including their concerns, history, relationships, circumstances, and goals. Approachable and genuine, she wants clients to feel safe speaking openly, knowing she is there to support them—not simply to check a box or move through a routine appointment.
Her therapeutic approach is collaborative and grounded in curiosity, kindness, and respect. Dorothea works alongside clients to identify patterns, consider new perspectives, and develop a clearer understanding of the experiences shaping their emotional well-being. She continually seeks opportunities to strengthen her therapeutic skills and values the lessons each client brings about resilience, growth, and the human condition.
Dorothea grew up on a farm, spending much of her childhood caring for animals and daydreaming in open fields. Although she did not fully appreciate rural life at the time, she now recognizes how those early experiences shaped her by teaching her responsibility, independence, compassion, and perseverance. These lessons continue to influence both her life and her work.
Outside of her practice, Dorothea prioritizes spending time with her family. She also enjoys reading, watching nature documentaries, caring for her plants, meditating, and exploring how nutrition and whole-body wellness can support mental health.
