Melissa Torres is a Board-Certified Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who provides compassionate, individualized, and evidence-based care. Understanding, observant, and deeply committed to helping others, Melissa strives to create a safe, welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable sharing their experiences without fear of judgment. She believes everyone deserves to feel heard, respected, and supported as they work toward becoming the healthiest and most confident version of themselves.
Melissa's passion for mental health care was shaped by her own life experiences. As the oldest of six children, she grew up navigating significant responsibilities from a young age. Her mother was a teenager when Melissa was born, and together they faced challenges that required resilience, determination, and adaptability. Growing up in a family affected by mental health concerns gave Melissa an early understanding of how emotional struggles can influence individuals and the people who love them.
These experiences helped develop her compassion for others, although it was not until she began studying psychology that she fully recognized how deeply they had influenced her perspective. Her undergraduate education strengthened her interest in understanding human behavior, emotional well-being, and the factors that contribute to mental health challenges. Having witnessed the difficulties that can arise when mental health concerns go unrecognized or misunderstood, Melissa became passionate about helping individuals access the understanding and support they deserve.
Melissa's educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, an Associate of Science in Nursing, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She later earned her Master of Science in Nursing with specialized training as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Her education across the biological sciences, psychology, and nursing provides a foundation for understanding the relationship between physical health, emotional well-being, and individual life experiences.
Before specializing in psychiatric mental health care, Melissa gained extensive experience as an emergency room registered nurse. Working in a fast-paced emergency setting exposed her to individuals experiencing a wide range of medical and psychiatric challenges. She found herself particularly drawn to patients experiencing mental health crises, wanting to understand not only their immediate concerns but also the circumstances and experiences that brought them to such vulnerable moments. These encounters reinforced her desire to provide compassionate support and help people feel safe, understood, and less alone.
Melissa's approach to care is patient-centered, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based practice. She believes meaningful care begins with understanding the whole person rather than focusing solely on symptoms or a diagnosis. She takes time to learn about each client's experiences, concerns, strengths, and goals while incorporating principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based therapeutic approaches when appropriate.
Education, open communication, and shared decision-making are central to Melissa's philosophy. She wants clients to feel informed and actively involved in their care, with a clear understanding of the goals they are working toward. She values honesty and believes a strong therapeutic relationship should provide both encouragement and opportunities for meaningful personal growth.
What continues to inspire Melissa is witnessing the positive difference mental health support can make in someone's life. Hearing clients share that they are feeling better, functioning more comfortably, and enjoying life again is especially rewarding. She believes seeking mental health care is a sign of strength, not weakness, and hopes every client leaves their appointments feeling understood, supported, and hopeful about what comes next.
Outside of work, Melissa enjoys traveling, exploring new places, and experiencing different cultures through food. She also appreciates a relaxing spa day as an opportunity to refresh her mind and body.
