Dr. Michelle Famakinwa, MD, is a Board-Certified Adult Psychiatrist. She was raised in Westchester, Illinois, a suburb just outside of Chicago, and grew up in a large, close-knit family as one of six siblings. Her parents, both psychiatric nurses who immigrated from Nigeria, instilled in her a deep appreciation for learning, service, and the importance of mental health care. Their stories and dedication to helping others played a powerful role in shaping her own path.

Dr. Famakinwa earned her Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She went on to complete her medical degree and general adult psychiatry residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, where she was trained in various psychotherapeutic modalities, including interpersonal therapy and psychodynamic therapy.

Her clinical approach is flexible and client-centered, often integrating different therapeutic styles based on the individual’s needs, preferences, and presenting concerns. She believes that the most effective care is rooted in honesty, collaboration, and consistency. Clients working with Dr. Famakinwa can expect a practical and thoughtful partner in their care—someone who is committed to their progress and will work alongside them to help meet their goals.

What drew Dr. Famakinwa to the field of psychiatry was the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s quality of life and to spend meaningful time with her patients. She is passionate about helping reduce the stigma around mental health and feels strongly that everyone deserves access to compassionate and comprehensive care. What keeps her engaged in the work is seeing her clients grow, improve, and accomplish things they may not have thought possible when they first began their therapeutic journey.

Described as caring, reliable, practical, and resilient, Dr. Famakinwa is someone who values both professionalism and authenticity in her clinical relationships. She believes that healing happens in the context of trust and that small steps forward often lead to lasting transformation.

Outside of work, Dr. Famakinwa enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, watching movies, exploring new restaurants, and staying active. She’s always up for trying a new fitness class and believes in maintaining both mental and physical wellness as part of a balanced life.
