Clinician Spotlight: Dr. Donald Nash

Happier Living’s Dr. Donald Nash’s path to psychology did not start the way most do. Instead, it was a background in international relations and national security that sparked his curiosity in people, systems, and behavior on a broader scale.
“Over time, that curiosity shifted toward a more personal focus on individual experience,” he says. “Coming from a family of clinicians also deeply influenced this transition, and I ultimately found myself drawn to the relational and service-oriented nature of clinical work. That combination of influences led me to psychology as a way to meaningfully support others while continuing to explore questions about human behavior.”
Happier Living’s mission resonates with Dr. Nash in a very practical sense. “At its core, it reflects a commitment to meeting people where they are while holding a clear vision for meaningful change,” he says. “That balance, between compassion and accountability, is central to how I approach my work with clients.”
Dr. Nash values Happier Living’s emphasis on thoughtful, client-centered care, clinical integrity, and a strong culture of learning and professional development. “It creates an environment where continued growth as a clinician is both supported and expected, while still honoring the complexity of the individuals we serve,” he says.
For Dr. Nash, meaningful change is built through consistency, attunement, and clarity. “I aim to create a space where clients feel both deeply understood and appropriately challenged, where validation and insight work together to help uncover and shift longstanding patterns,” he says. “Ultimately, my work is rooted in helping individuals move toward greater stability, insight, and a stronger sense of self. It is a process that takes time, but when approached thoughtfully, it can be deeply transformative.”
When he isn’t working, Dr. Nash finds grounding in the simple, everyday routines that create balance: spending time with family, walking the dog, getting outside, and creating space to reset. He values time spent connecting with others and engaging in a range of personal interests. “I have a strong appreciation for the culinary arts, marine environments, skiing, and horticulture, along with time outdoors, including the occasional round of golf. As a Chicagoan, I also enjoy following sports and sharing those experiences with family and friends, which remains an important way I stay connected and grounded outside of work.”
