Leadership Spotlight: Director of Clinician Experience Dr. Alexis Weisinger

Happier Living’s Dr. Alexis Weisinger didn’t choose psychology; it chose her.

“From a very young age, people would open up to me about all sorts of things, even referring to me as ‘The Psychologist’ in childhood,” she says. “I had a natural curiosity about people and their struggles and a desire to connect and make things better.”

Dr. Weisinger always knew she would eventually become a psychotherapist. It also helped that she had experienced therapy as both a patient and a clinician. “I have spent equally as many years on both sides of the couch, so I have had endless opportunities to observe how effective and impactful the therapeutic process could be,” she says.

As the company’s director of clinician experience, Dr. Weisinger is able to lead and practice psychotherapy. “I love the variety in my job in that I get to do so many different things,” she says. “I get to develop and run training programs, provide clinical supervision, develop and teach psychotherapy courses, manage various aspects of the business to help us learn and grow, and of course, engage in my first love, providing psychotherapy. Mostly though, I just love the people that I work with; it’s a wonderfully supportive team,” she says.

It is no surprise that Dr. Weisinger is happiest when she is connecting with others.

“Whether friends, family, clients or new people, it’s human connection that really excites me,” she says. “I also love being outside, especially by the water, so when I’m not working you can find me at the beach or the pool (weather permitting), reading a book or spending time with friends, family, my husband and my pup.” In her undergraduate years, she was an avid ballroom dancer.

Dr. Weisinger often finds herself returning to the following quote from interpersonal psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan: “We are all more human than otherwise.”

“No matter how disparate from myself a particular client may seem, our humanity binds us in a way that is greater than our differences, and that’s what permits the healing to begin,” she says. “I always begin an introduction with a new client by sharing my personal understanding of what the therapeutic relationship is, conveying that this is a safe, privileged space where anything can be talked about, at the client’s pace and comfort, of course.”

She invites collaboration, feedback and critiques from her clients, working to custom tailor an integrative treatment approach for their unique presentation, rather than assuming a “one-size-fits-all” approach. “I always check in at the end of the first session to see how the client experienced it, never assuming that they will wish to continue with me. Most importantly, I have a genuine curiosity about each client, which I try to convey authentically with empathic active listening and non-judgmental response.”
